School 2 Work: Erika's New Job at Value Village
Our School 2 Work program focuses on employment readiness and job placement within the community for students in their last year of high school. The process starts during this time to ensure that skills are identified and developed during the important years of emerging adulthood. While some participants are undecided on their employment goals, Erika knew exactly what she wanted to do; she wanted to work in a clothing oriented retail environment. Her personable nature and dedication to all things fashion, makes her the perfect fit for this type of community employment.
Her journey started with a summer internship at a Value Village store in Burien. Within a month, she quickly picked up on the intricacies of the retail world and soon she was anticipating her supervisor’s needs without being asked. When it became known that she was planning to apply for a job at a local Ross® in the area, her supervisor knew she had to act quickly if she wanted to keep this new and incredible employee.
Erika was immediately given an application to fill out during her shift and in short order, was offered an official job interview at Value Village. She obviously impressed them during that interview; she has been offered a paid position working in the shoe department, which she has gladly accepted. Her tasks include: serving customers, restocking and arranging and coordinating the many shoe displays throughout the large store. Now, gainfully employed and beginning her senior year of high school, Erika is well on the path to truly being independent and job ready when she graduates in 2012. She also has the honor of being the first (and one of the quickest) Northwest Center Works School 2 Work placements for the King County 2011-2012 school year.
